Carbohydrates

  • Carbohydrates are orgainc compounds containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. They are primarily utilised as an energy source though they have other important functions.
    • Carbohydrates include simple sugars such as monosaccharides (e.g. glucose, galactose and fructose). Two monosaccharides can bejoined together to form a disaccharide e.g. sucrose (common sugar) composed of glucose and fructose.

    • When a number of monosaccharides are covalently joined together, the resulting molecule is called a polysaccharide. Starch is a common polysaccharide found in plants while Glycogen is a polysaccharide found in animals (liver and muscle)
